Westlife face unexpected competition for the Christmas number one slot from Bob the Builder. The Irish band had been hot favourites to top the charts this Sunday with their new single What Makes A Man. But early sales figures show Bob the Builder's Can You Fix It? is in the lead, selling over 2,000 more records than Westlife so far. 
A spokesperson for HMV said it would be very close and there is no clear favourite: "In past years Christmas number ones have often been very predictable." 
Can You Fix It? is already guaranteed to become the biggest selling single this year.

Bob The Builder is narrowly ahead of Westlife in the midweek race for No 1 according to UK retailers HMV. But Bob The Builder's sales also take into account Sunday sales while Westlife's figures are based on Monday sales only.

'It's too close to call at the moment although it's very likely that Westlife could overtake Bob later in the week,' says HMV chart expert Gennaro Castaldo. 'Both singles are on course to sell 250,000 copies this week alone.'
